I recently made these fun and easy speech bubble magnets so I thought I’d share a tute!
Here are the materials you will need:
- White Sculpey (polymer clay)
- Permanent Markers (such as Sharpies)
- A bamboo skewer or toothpick
- An xacto knife (for adults only!)
- A plastic placemat (Dollar stores are great for these)
- A rolling pin or even a soda can will work in a pinch
- Super glue of some sort. (not hot glue!)
- Magnets. You can get these at any craft store or even Loewe’s.
- An oven or a toaster oven. ADULTS ONLY!
Start with a hunk of Sculpey that is about the size of a large meatball. (a bit larger than a ping pong ball) Hold it in your hand for a minute, and squeeze it and roll it around. You will feel the clay softening from the warmth of your skin. Keep going for another minute until your Sculpey ball is nice and soft.
Stand up and press the ball down onto the placemat with the palm of your hand. Now turn it over and press it down again.
Now you can start rolling it out. Roll it in a few different directions, flip it over, and roll it some more. You want the clay to be about the thickness of a Ritz Cracker. Too thin is no good. (not like a potato chip) Too thick is no good either.
See my demo here:
Great! Now that your clay is the right thickness let’s “draw” our speech bubble. Use your skewer or toothpick to draw the shape of the speech bubble. Don’t press too hard.
*GET HELP FROM AN ADULT FOR THIS PART
Now use your xacto knife to carefully cut it out and then flip it over. This way none of the lines you made with the skewer will show on the front of your bubble.
Take your fingertip and gently press the edges all the way around to round them out a bit. Make a few!
Now it’s time to BAKE! AGAIN, PLEASE GET HELP FROM AN ADULT FOR THE BAKING
Gently place your speech bubbles onto a baking sheet and bake at 275 degrees for 10 minutes. Since these are so small and thin you really don’t need more time than that. Once they are done take them out of the oven and allow them to cool for 5 – 10 minutes.
Now – the FUN PART! Decorate your speech bubbles with your permanent markers. You can use pencil first to make sure you got your design just as you want it. Once that is done, you can glue the magnets onto the backs. It takes only a few seconds to dry so your magnets will be ready to use ASAP!
I hope you make some and if you do, please tag me or send me photos, I’d love to see what you come up with.
HAPPY CRAFTING!!
